Significance of Barak River

The Barak River or Barbakro flows 900 kilometres through the states of Manipur, Mizoram and Assam in India. It flows into Bangladesh where it bifurcates into the Surma River and the Kushiyara River which converge again to become the Meghna River before forming the Ganges Delta.

The Barak River is significant for several reasons, including its aquatic biodiversity, its role in the economy, and its potential for flood control and hydroelectric power generation:

·                  Aquatic biodiversity

The Barak River is one of the world's richest rivers for aquatic biodiversity, with over 2,000 species of fish, as well as the Siamese crocodile, susu dolphin, and smooth-coated otter.

·                  Economic role

The Barak River is the second largest river in Northeast India and is important for the economy of the region.

·                  Flood control and hydroelectric power

The Tipaimukh Dam is proposed to be built on the Barak River in Manipur to control flooding and generate hydroelectric power. However, the dam has been delayed due to environmental concerns, water rights disputes, and the need to relocate people.
